Which is Better: a Blog or a Vlog?

Blogging and vlogging have existed for decades, and each continually evolves in its own way. Both have been successfully and widely used in the world of internet marketing. So which industry is better?

This recent survey shows that 74% of respondents said videos are more effective than blog posts for generating leads. Does that mean video content is stronger than written content?

Not at all! There are situations where written content fares better than video content. Videos may generate leads in some situations (like “going viral”), but blogs will be better at generating leads in other situations (organic searches and affiliate marketing).

When it comes to profit, again, it depends. Both industries are lucrative in their own way. The highest earning YouTuber is an eight-year old named Ryan Kaji. Yes – an eight-year old. Ryan Kaji earned $26 million in 2019. Although his channel doesn’t rank in the top 10 most subscribed YouTube channels, he earns more than any of them.

Think that’s crazy? The highest earning blog on the internet is the Huffington Post, earning a whopping $14 million a month. The Huffington Post was founded by Arriana Huffington in 2005 and was acquired by AOL in 2011 for $135 million.

The Huffington Post, a blog that mostly covers topics like life and politics, is one of the most successful blogs in the world (in terms of blogs), generating revenue mainly from sponsored advertising.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that a blog is better than a vlog.

The Best Format Depends on Your Strengths

Blogging requires skilled writing and vlogging requires great interpersonal communication skills. Even successful vloggers have created blogs, which goes to show how a blog can complement almost any business.

While you can tackle both (if you possess the skills), it’s best to focus on one or the other because of the time it takes to establish yourself. Both blogging and vlogging require you to start from scratch — which means zero traffic. You’ll need to invest hard-work, dedication, and grit.
