How Popular is Medium?

Medium is a website that sorts blog posts by topics and was created by Evan Williams, one of the founders of Twitter and Blogger, in August of 2012. Readers who access posts published on Medium’s platform only get access to a few articles before being confronted by a paywall.

In 2017, Medium introduced its membership system where readers can pay $5/month or $50/year for unlimited access to the platform. In 2019, the estimated number of monthly active users on Medium was between 85 and 100 million. 

So yeah – Medium is pretty high on the blogging platform popularity totem poll.

For Evan Williams, Medium’s subscription-based business model is the answer for publishers looking to escape the collapsing digital ad market, which is now largely dominated by Facebook and Google. Medium subscription system has successfully made it into an advertisement-free haven for online users.

Medium also has a Partner Program that pays writers when Medium successfully curates their blog post. This is the only way to make money on Medium as a writer. Although Medium allows publishers to include affiliate links in their posts, it’s highly unlikely for content with affiliate links to be curated.

As you can see, Medium is reader-centered and makes it easy for them to gain access to high-quality content. Since content on Medium is sorted by topics, it’ll be difficult to build authority on the platform.

If you’re a writer aiming to build a living wage through Medium, you’ll be greatly disappointed. It’s still a great platform, though. Use Medium the way major bloggers do: establish your own self-hosted website first, then use Medium as a promotional tool.

After all, writing on Medium is free, so there’s nothing to lose.
